Travel & Tourism

Intent

The BTEC Travel and Tourism intent is to give students a realistic understanding of the global industry, building essential employability skills (research, planning, communication) alongside knowledge of destinations, customer service, and marketing, preparing them for careers in travel, hospitality, events, or further education like university degrees, by blending theory with practical, real-world applications.

Implementation

At both KS4 and KS5 students complete coursework elements which are internally assessed and externally moderated. There are also external exams with one of the assessments based on pre-release material.

The key elements of the qualification are:

Career Preparation: To provide a realistic pathway into the fast-growing travel and tourism sector, opening eyes to diverse career opportunities (e.g., airlines, hotels, tour operations).

Skill Development: To foster transferable skills like research, planning, presentation, teamwork, problem-solving, and digital literacy.

Industry Knowledge: To understand the structure, economic importance, marketing, and customer service within the UK and international tourism industries.

Global Awareness: To develop globally-minded citizens with curiosity about different destinations and cultures.

Progression: To serve as a strong foundation for higher education (university) or direct employment.

Impact

BTEC Travel & Tourism courses significantly impact students by providing practical skills, industry knowledge, and career pathways in a major global sector, while also exploring tourism's broad environmental, social, and economic impacts (like sustainability issues or effects of pandemics/climate change) on destinations, businesses, and communities, preparing them for roles from hospitality to airline operations or further study.

Economic Impact: Analyses tourism's contribution to GDP, jobs, and infrastructure.

Environmental Impact: Covers sustainability, resource use, habitat loss, and carbon footprints.

Social/Cultural Impact: Explores effects on local communities, cultural exchange, and "staged authenticity,".

External Factors: Investigates how global events (pandemics, climate change, security) and legislation affect travel.
