Performing Arts

Intent

In Drama at Central Academy, we deliver a broad and exciting curriculum which provides opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and understanding, enhance their practical performance skills, share their talents and prepare them for a successful future. Students have fortnightly Drama lessons for the duration of KS3 before having the opportunity to progress on to further study at KS4 within GCSE Drama, as well as A-Level Drama & Theatre in KS5. Students will study a wide range of styles of performance, theatre history, performance skills and techniques and be able to apply and develop this knowledge and skillset in a comfortable and safe environment.

Our Drama curriculum is designed to naturally embed and develop students character values and virtues, which is an important Drama lessons play in schools. Students will develop their character skills such as; confidence, resilience, creativity and respect when engaging with their peers during grouped activities. Through ensemble work and performance, students build confidence, resilience, creativity, respect and emotional intelligence. The curriculum actively promotes spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding, fundamental British Values and mutual respect, ensuring students are prepared to thrive in their future careers, whatever their choice of path.

We strive to ensure that Performing arts lessons engage and excite students so that they develop their own personal interests and have an idea of how they may be utilise the performing and arts industries within their future careers. We encourage students to challenge themselves with new experiences, whether that be standing up in class and performing work to their peers, or taking part in one of the many extra-curricular activities on offer every term. These whole school events play an important role in students holistic development which we believe is an important aspect of growing up. Our co-curricular clubs include termly performing arts events, shows and school productions, drama clubs, and regular trips to the theatre to see plays and musical theatre.

Implementation

Students receive Drama lessons throughout KS3, with clear progression into GCSE Drama at KS4 and A-Level Drama & Theatre at KS5. Teaching is delivered by subject specialists who bring expertisecreativity and enthusiasm into the classroom.

At KS3, lessons are predominantly practical, focusing on the development of core performance skills, theatrical techniques and creative exploration within a safe and inclusive environment. Students explore a broad and diverse range of theatrical styles, genres and practitioners, encouraging curiosity and creative risk-taking.

At KS4 and KS5, learning balances practical performance with the development of theoretical knowledge, analysis and evaluation. Students follow the AQA specifications for GCSE Drama and A-Level Drama & Theatre, engaging in devised and scripted performance work alongside written coursework and examinations.

Assessment is ongoing and purposeful. At KS4 and KS5, assessment follows AQA examination requirements, with both practical and written components contributing to final outcomes.

Impact

As a result of the Drama curriculum at Central Academy, students develop into confident, articulate and reflective individuals who are able to collaborate effectively and express ideas creatively. Students leave Drama lessons with strong communication skills, resilience and self-belief, which positively impact their learning across the curriculum and beyond.

Students make clear progress in both practical and theoretical aspects of Drama, with many choosing to continue their studies at KS4 and KS5. The curriculum supports strong examination outcomes and prepares students for further education and careers within the creative industries, as well as a wide range of other pathways.

Drama at Central Academy empowers students to realise their potential and become confident, well-rounded young people ready for the next stage of their journey.
