Intent

The Health and Social Care curriculum’s Intent is to equip students with foundational core knowledge and skills for the Health and Social Care Sector. It focuses on person-centered care, holistic (physical, intellectual, emotional and social) development throughout all life stages and health indicators and conditions. This prepares students for further study in KS5 and careers in the Health and Social Care sector. Students will also learn, develop and apply core skills, values and attributes such as confidentiality, communication and respect. Additionally, the curriculum builds on transferrable skills such as critical thinking, research, presentation, independence and problem-solving skills. Finally, the curriculum explores the vast careers available in the Health and Social Care sector and links theory to real-world examples in specialisms such as nursing, social work and physiotherapy. 

Implementation

The Implementation of the Health and Social Care curriculum involves varied teaching methods, practical activities and researchStudents are introduced to new knowledge and given the opportunity to research further to deepen their understanding before applying to a case study. In Years 10 and 12 students are given a week to gain work placements which could be within a Health and Social Care setting such as a care home. This provides the students with hands-on experience and they chance to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the curriculum. Students will also hear from employers and professionals within the Health and Social Care sector throughout the course, either through online, video resources or face to face visits. These industry links will share insights and real-life experiences from working in the Health and Social Care sector. All learners will be supported to achieve outcomes through tailored support in lessons and assessments.  

Assessment is completed through written exams and Pearson Set Assignments (PSA). When completing a PSA students can use their notes from lessons and research to support their assessment. Within these, there is an element of practical case-study application, independent research and essay writing.  

Year 10: Unit 1 Pearson Set Assignment  

Year 11: Unit 2 Pearson Set Assignment and Unit 3 Written Exam (2 hours) 

Year 12: Unit 7 (optional unit) Pearson Set Assignment and Unit 1 Written Exam (1.5 hours) 

Year 13: Unit 2 Written Exam (1.5 hours) and Unit 3 Pearson Set Assignment 

Impact

The Impact of studying Health and Social Care at Central Academy is developing confident, independent learners with transferable skills, deep understanding of diverse needs, ethical awareness, and clear pathways into Health and Social Care professions. From the Health and Social Care curriculum students will gain essential knowledge and understanding of all areas of Health and Social Care as well as developing their grammar, time management and computing skills through PSAs and exam technique and critical thinking through their written exams. Following completion of Level 2 and/or Level 3 Health and Social Care at Central Academy, students should be equipped with the practical skills, knowledge, and an understanding of the demands and values essential for working in Health and Social Sare.
