Sociology

Intent

A Level Sociology at our school follows the AQA specification and offers students a powerful lens through which to understand the complexities of modern society. The course encourages learners to question assumptions, analyse evidence, and explore how social structures shape everyday life. It is an ideal subject for students who want to make sense of the world around them and engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues.

Implementation

The A Level Sociology curriculum is delivered through a carefully sequenced programme, that builds knowledge and skills in a logical, accessible way. Lessons incorporate a blend of explicit instruction, structured discussion, contemporary case studies, and guided application tasks to help students connect sociological theory to real-world contexts. Lessons routinely incorporate retrieval practice, low stakes quizzes, and cumulative review to strengthen long-term understanding of key concepts and terminology. Analytical writing is developed through modelling, scaffolded practice, and regular opportunities to evaluate contrasting sociological perspectives. Assessment is integrated throughout the course: formative checks identify misconceptions early, while summative assessments mirror AQA exam formats to build confidence and exam readiness. High-quality feedback ensures students know how to improve and make sustained progress across the two-year course.

Impact

The impact of our Sociology curriculum is seen in students who can think independently, communicate ideas clearly, and apply sociological perspectives to real-world issues. Through regular assessment, structured feedback, and opportunities to revisit and deepen learning, students develop secure knowledge of key theories, concepts, and research methods. They become skilled in constructing analytical written responses and evaluating contrasting viewpoints — essential competencies for AQA examinations and beyond. Our learners leave the course with a strong understanding of social diversity and inequality, an appreciation of evidence-based reasoning, and the confidence to participate in informed discussion about society. Many progress to university study in social sciences, humanities, law, and related fields, carrying forward the critical thinking and reflective habits developed through Sociology.
