Intent

The intent of Business Studies education is to equip students with the essential knowledge, skills, and mindset required to thrive in a dynamic and competitive business environment. This includes: 

  • Core Knowledge: Understanding fundamental principles such as finance management, marketing strategies, operational processes, and strategic decision-making. 

  • Critical Thinking: Encouraging students to analyse real-world business scenarios, evaluate risks, and make informed decisions. 

  • Creativity and Innovation: Sparking imagination and inspiring commercial thinking to foster entrepreneurial spirit. 

  • Ethical and Social Awareness: Developing an understanding of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and ethical considerations in business. 

  • Global Perspective: Recognising the influence of economic, political, and technological factors on businesses in local, national, and international contexts. 

The overarching goal is to prepare students for academic progression, professional success, and informed citizenship in a global economy. 

Implementation

Business studies starts with exploration of how and why businesses start, moving through to the issues and decisions businesses make as they grow. 

Key business concepts, issues and skills involved in starting and running a small business are exploredProviding a framework for students to explore core concepts through the lens of an entrepreneur setting up a business. In this theme, students will be introduced to local and national business contexts and will develop an understanding of how these contexts impact business behavior and decisions.  

Students will develop an understanding of the interdependent nature of business activity through interactions between business operations, finance, marketing and human resources, as well as the relationship between the business and the environment in which it operates 

Students will also be exposed to issues and decisions used to grow a business, with emphasis on aspects of marketing, operations, finance and human resources. Students will be introduced to national and global business contexts and will develop an understanding of how these contexts impact business behavior and decisions.  

Impact

Overall Business has the potential to equip students with practical knowledge and skills that can benefit them both academically and professionally. 

Students will develop an Entrepreneurial Mindset through learning about business start-ups, innovation, and risk-taking. This can inspire students to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option. 

For those interested in pursuing higher education in business-related fields, GCSE Business can lay a strong foundation for further studies in subjects like economics, business management, marketing, or finance and for students not planning to pursue a career in business, the skills acquired through GCSE Business, such as communication, teamwork, and financial literacy, are highly transferable and beneficial in any profession.
