Personal, Social, Health and Economic

Intent

We aim to deliver a curriculum which allows every student to gain knowledge and to be given guidance around a range of different life issues and skills students will need around both PSHE and RHSE. This will ensure that students can build their own lives as participating citizens within society and will also be able to keep themselves safe. Some main points that students will develop an understanding of include:

  • The legal system of the UK, their individual liberties and understand key laws such as the Equality act and the protected characteristics.

  • Democracy and the voting system of the UK.

  • Post-16 options, University, College and career options.

  • Understand consent in relationships and understand what a positive relationship looks like.

  • Knowledge about mental health and wellbeing and strategies to implement to maintain a positive mental health.

  • Create a healthy, balanced routine and diet.

  • The world around them and their role within it- including financial literacy and media influence.

  • Risks relating to physical health, mental health, substance misuse and sexual health.

  • Developing empathy to create a school culture that is anti- discriminatory

Implementation

Students are given the opportunity to learn and gain knowledge about a wide range of subjects within PSHE, including sex education, financial literacy, personal hygiene and the protected characteristics etc. Teachers will provide opportunities in the classroom for safe discussions, where students can build upon their articulation and oracy skills, debate and independent practice where students can reflect upon the knowledge they have learnt.

Throughout KS3 and KS4 students will have the opportunity to listen to talks from external visitors where content will be delivered in assembly/smaller workshop formats. The PSHE curriculum is created with our character virtues integrated throughout, providing students with opportunities to be ambitious by completing Stretch task. Students also become respectful individuals and develop oracy skills through discussion in their lessons, with visitors and show determination when completing their independent practice tasks, giving the opportunity to build upon prior knowledge that has been taught in the lesson and put the hard work into practice.

During KS5, students are given a lot more time to discuss and debate answers and topics with members from their tutor group weekly. The sessions are designed to aid more articulate discussions from students and aim to equip students with a toolkit appropriate to use post-18, by studying interview methods such as the STAR method. Students are also kept up to date with current events around the world with ‘In the News’ sessions where students are given the opportunity to debate current affairs.  In all lessons, students will hear from a group of young, diverse members of society and use these videos to aid discussion and debates within the classroom.

Impact

Students will then be able to apply the content they have learned in lessons to everyday life situations, whether this be when opening up their first bank account, or becoming aware of the dangers of social media online. Students will be able to articulate their ideas and opinions in group settings and be able to communicate with those around them effectively and efficiently. Students will have developed the skills to build and maintain positive relationships with their peers, teachers and people around them. Our curriculum intends to equip students will knowledge that they can use throughout their life to make informed choices.

All aspects of the PSHE curriculum are a vital part of us achieving our Central Academy character virtues and students demonstrate these values regularly in lessons. This is so that students can leave Central Academy leading successful and fulfilled live, understanding the world around them and have the ability to set ambitious goals for their long-term futures, regardless of background.
