Media

Intent

The intent of Media education is to develop students’ creative, analytical, and technical skillsThis includes:

Understanding Media Language and Representation: Students learn how media texts communicate meaning and influence audiences.

Critical Analysis: Encouraging students to deconstruct media products and evaluate their social, cultural, and political contexts.

Creative Production: Inspiring students to design and produce digital media products using industry-standard tools and techniques.

Digital Literacy: Equipping students with practical skills in image editing, video production, web design, and interactive media.

Ethical and Social Awareness: Exploring issues such as representation, diversity, regulation, and the impact of media on society.

Implementation

The curriculum is structured to provide a balance of theory and practical application:

At KS4 students will carry out pre productioncreation and post production. Teaching will undertake project based learning with use of case studies to supplement theoretical aspects. Industry standard software is used to create products to meet client requirements.

At KS5 students will study a range of media types:

  • Core Areas:

  • Media Language, Representation, Industries, Audiences: Studied across TV, film, advertising, online platforms.

  • Close Analysis: Applying theoretical frameworks (e.g., semiotics, narrative theory).

  • Media Issues and Debates: Globalisation, regulation, digital convergence.

  • NEA (Non-Exam Assessment): Students create cross-media products (e.g., magazine and website).

Analytical essays and case studies are used to enhance learners analysis of media products.

Impact

We undertake regular assessments throughout the year on all the topics covered. End of topic assessments allows teachers to identify misconceptions and re teach where needed.

This allows us to compare student performance across the whole cohort. Students will be able to apply their knowledge, ideas and skills in both further education and in the real world. Our aim is to ensure that students will gain positive progress in all subjects and groupings and maximise attainment so that students are able to pursue a further career in this area should they choose to.
